Chocolate & Peanut Butter Shake

This shake is hands down one of my favourites. It has all the best qualities that I like in a shake (thick, creamy, yummy..) but with the added bonus of being healthy (because, obviously that's my deal).

Alright, here are some quick and dirty health facts about my "superfood" additions:

RAW CACAO POWDER--super high in Magnesium that oh so miraculous mineral that reduces stress, relaxes muscles and basically powers all the enzymatic reactions in our body. NBD.

RAW MACA POWDER-- a root from the cruciferous veggie family that is ground down into powder form, is one of my favourite superfoods. With a caramel-like flavour it's an easy addition to smoothies and baking. Maca is also known as an "adaptogen" (meaning it helps the body deal,ADAPT and recover from stress), as well as providing energy and balancing hormones! Studies have also shown that it can increase sexual desire. Hot damn. 

HEMP HEARTS--full of ridiculous amounts of fibre, Omega 3's, protein and alllll of the amino acids, hemp seeds are a great addition to any smoothie. A tbsp or 2 in place of protein powder helps me feel full and satisfied longer. 

COLLAGEN PEPTIDES--Derived from beef sources or marine sources (read: fish) and processed into a tasteless white powder, collagen has become a super trendy supplement, mostly due to its claims that it can reduce the signs of aging (collagen is lost in the body as we age, which results in our skin losing its elasticity and sagging i.e. wrinkles). If you are going to go with collagen, find a brand that uses grass-fed and humanely raised cattle or uses sustainable fishing practices. Signs you have purchased a good quality collagen supplement: should be white, tasteless and dissolves easily in liquid. 

 


CHOCOLATE & PEANUT BUTTER SHAKE RECIPE (makes 1 super large shake, or 2 regular size)

Prep time: 5 minutes   Cook Time: 2 minutes

Ingredients:

  • 1 frozen banana

  • 1/2 cup frozen sweet potato chunks

  • 1/2 cup rolled oats

  • 1 tbsp maca powder

  • 1 tbsp raw cacao powder

  • 1 tbsp collagen peptides

  • 1 heaping spoonful organic peanut butter

  • 1 tbsp hemp hearts

  • 1 tsp pure maple syrup

  • approx 1 1/2 cups coconut milk

Directions:

  1. BLEND
